FAQs: gsLearn is Girl Scouts’ official online and on-demand training forum. It empowers users (“learners”) to complete training at their own pace. Learners have access to Girl Scout–specific content that supports accuracy and consistency across the Girl Scout Movement.
Who has access to gsLearn?
At this time, gsLearn is available to all registered adult volunteers who have selected or have been assigned a volunteer role.
How will gsLearn benefit me?
gsLearn organizes important information and brings training opportunities straight to you through the convenience of your own computer and at times when learning is most convenient for you! Learn what you need to know, when you want to know it!
How do I access gsLearn?
Volunteers access gsLearn by selecting
"myGS" on our website and selecting gsLearn on the
left-hand menu. This directs the volunteer to their gsLearn home page.
Volunteers will have access to their single account with their own
unique username & email and will be able to complete training
assigned to them.
I am unable to access gsLearn. What should I do?
Be
sure to check the announcements section of this webpage for any
reports of issues with accessing the system and follow any
troubleshooting tips that may be available.
After completing any troubleshooting steps, contact Customer Care at 800-345-6858 or email customercare@gsofsi.org.
My email address has changed. Should I update it in gsLearn?
No, please contact Customer Care at 800-345-6858 or email customercare@gsofsi.org to
adjust your email and/or username to prevent any access issues.
If I changed my password for myGS, do I need to change it in
gsLearn too?
No, gsLearn uses the single sign-in through
myGS as the only point of access for volunteers even though the
platform appears to have a password profile setting.
Will training material still be available on the GSofSI
website?
Yes, training material and documents may still
be available for volunteers to reference from our website. However,
all training courses associated to any material or documents will be
housed and will need to be completed in gsLearn as necessary.
I am looking for a course but cannot find it. Where can I locate
it?
There are several situations that may apply to help
you find the training you are seeking in gsLearn.
1. Some courses are available to specific volunteer roles. For example, a specific training may be assigned or made available to those holding a role or responsibility of a treasurer. It is likely their training would only be available to that volunteer group instead of every gsLearn user (learner). If you need to be added to a group, please contact Customer Care to ensure your role is correctly identified in your membership profile and for help to make any necessary adjustments in gsLearn.
2. Some training will be "assigned" to learners and will be visible on your home page. If you haven’t been assigned a training, you may still have access to the training and would need to search the content library. If you are not able to locate the training on your home page or in the content library, contact Customer Care to have your training access adjusted.
What is the difference between being ‘assigned’ a training and
having ‘access’ to a training?
Specific training will be assigned to certain volunteer groups
in gsLearn. Generally, if a training is assigned, it is strongly
encouraged that the user/learner complete it. If a training is
accessible to the user/learner, it has been made available to their
volunteer group(s) in case the user/learner is interested in learning
more. For example, training related to our product programs is
assigned to product managers for either the service unit or troop.
This training shows up on their home page. However, we also make the
training available as an option to service unit managers and troop
leaders, in case they would like to familiarize themselves with the
information. These users/learners can find the training in their
content library.
1. If you are typing a course title, make sure you are typing in the correct title. The beginning title of our courses will begin with “416 (GSofSI Council)”. Courses made available through Girl Scouts of the USA have a beginning title of “GSUSA”. We display our council code of “416” to differentiate our available training amongst the other councils who share the same learning management system with us.
2. If the filtering feature in the content library is used, ensure the correct selections have been made. For example, if you are searching for a course, but have the learning paths filtering feature selected in the content type area, only the learning paths will be displayed. In this way, filtering may prevent users/learners from finding a training. The same would apply if a user/learner was searching for only learning paths, but inadvertently enabled the course filtering feature. The filtering features are listed as: content type, topics, languages, favorites and has discussion forum.
I accidentally opened a course and cannot remove it from my
dashboard. What should I do?
You become enrolled in a
course once it is opened and the first module has started. Unless the
course is completed, it will continue to be displayed on your home
page. If you inadvertently started a course and do not want to
complete it, open the course and select ‘unenroll’ in the area at the
top of the window just below the course description.
Click here for a list of training opportunities available in gsLearn! This list will be updated as new training programs are available. We are continuously growing our training repertoire, so check back often to look for updates!
What is the difference between a course and learning path?
A course is a series of modules comprised of a single subject or topic. A learning path is a series of courses comprised of a broad topic or subject matter and will show progression in learning. Our New Leader Orientation Training is made up of a series of learning paths to cover a wide range of topics for our volunteers.
What is ILT training?
In the future, we will be able to offer Instructor Live Training through gsLearn. We will update our learners once this exciting feature is available. You will likely see our Peer to Peer Mentoring Series offered through this feature.
How do I register for or cancel ILT training sessions?
More information will come once this feature is active.
How do I find or download reference materials/handouts mentioned in some courses?
Reference materials/handouts can be found in the ‘additional references tab at the start or landing page of a course. Users/learners can access reference materials/handouts any time, even after completion of a course, by visiting the beginning of the course.
How can I verify my completed trainings?
Users/learners can view all completed trainings under the achievements section from their home page. Additionally, some trainings may also have a certificate of completion that can be downloaded by clicking on the prompt in the course list in the achievements list. If adjustments to any training completion need to be made, please contact Customer Care.
The training I am taking in gsLearn is not working. What should I do?
There are several situations where users/learners may need to complete some troubleshooting steps. Refer to both the announcement section of this page to see if there is a widespread issue. If not, please consult the list below to resolve the issue. If additional support is needed, contact Customer Care.
1. Ensure stable Wi-Fi or internet is available. As necessary, reset your Wi-Fi router or reestablish your internet connection. Phone and tablet devices often require a consistently strong connection.
2. Try signing out of gsLearn and re-entering the program through myGS in a new window.
3. Close the internet browser and clear the browser cache, history and/or ensure cookies are enabled. Then, re-access gsLearn from the myGS page.
4. Try using a different internet browser. Google Chrome works most consistently for many users/learns.
5. If using a phone or tablet, try using a desktop or laptop instead.
6. Ensure your device can support media files, mostly MP4, to play. There are free programs that users/learners can download, like VLC player from videolan.org.
As we are made aware of technical issues with gsLearn, updates and solutions will be posted in this section. Users/learners should also refer to our troubleshooting section on this page for additional information.
Update 6/24/2021 (mobile device accessibility)
Issue: gsLearn not accessible on mobile device.

Beginning in January 2022, each volunteer who has been appointed a role requiring a background check will be required to complete the DCFS Illinois Mandated Reporter Training in gsLearn. Volunteers must complete this course every three years.
How do I access this training?
Volunteers can access this training by logging in to their MY GS account and selecting gsLearn on the left-hand menu. Once logged in to gsLearn, this course will be displayed as a training assignment on the volunteer’s homepage or dashboard. Volunteers can also use the search filters, type in the search bar or find the training in the ‘Content Library’ section of gsLearn.
I’ve fully completed the training, now what?
The course in gsLearn will show 100% completion if the training assignment has been satisfied. Volunteers will see this completion under the “Achievements” section of their gsLearn account. gsLearn will send an email reminder to the volunteer approximately 30 days prior to the three-year expiration as reminder to renew the training requirement. Volunteers can retake the course in gsLearn to recertify for another three years.
Training records of completion will also be available in Looker for Service Unit Managers and Registrars to review and manage the training compliance for their unit volunteers.
I’ve already taken this training for my employer or another volunteer organization. Do I need to take it again?
No. If a volunteer has completed the DCFS Illinois Mandated Reporter Training within the last three years, a copy of the certificate of completion needs to be emailed to customercare@gsofsi.org. This will satisfy the requirement for Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois until the 3-year certification window expires.
I’ve taken a similar training program for another organization; will the council office accept that?
Currently, the only training certification that we are able to accept is the DCFS Illinois Mandated Reporter Training.
What if I have questions on my responsibilities as a mandated reporter, who do I contact?
Please refer to the Manual for Mandated Reporters provided by Illinois Department of DCFS Children & Family Services for further information.
What do I do if I have reasonable suspicion of abuse or neglect?
Girl Scout Council staff and registered volunteers are mandated reporters by completing the required online training and are to report all incidents of reasonable suspicion that abuse or neglect has occurred to the Illinois State 24-hour hotline at (800)-25-ABUSE. Then, volunteers should reach out to their Community Engagement Manager with their concern.

Understanding Your Role is a course introduced in April 2023 that is part of the required training for returning and new adult volunteers. This brief but thorough course is now the official method for volunteers to receive, review, and accept the volunteer position descriptions for the roles in which they will serve on an annual basis. Log in to MYGS and choose gsLearn from the menu to the left to access this training that is required for the current membership year.
Volunteer roles that require this training:
Service Unit Roles: Manager, Registrar, Treasurer, Troop Organizers, Product Manager (Fall Product and Cookies) and Juliette Adult
Troop Roles: Troop Leader, Co-Leader, Treasurer, Product Manager (Fall Product and Cookies) and Troop Helper
Supporting Roles: Delegate and Alternate, Event Helper, Cupboard Manager and Council Trainer
Day Camp Roles: Day Camp Leadership, Day Camp Helper and Day Camp First Aider
How do I access this training?
Volunteers can access this training by logging in to their MYGS account and selecting gsLearn on the left-hand menu. Once logged in to gsLearn, this course will be displayed as a training assignment on the volunteer’s homepage or dashboard. Volunteers can also use the search filters, type in the search bar or find the training in the ‘Content Library’ section of gsLearn.
I’ve fully completed the training, now what?
The course in gsLearn will show 100% completion if the training assignment has been satisfied as a result of the volunteer accepting and agreeing to the responsibilities and expectations outlined in the position description(s) for the roles in which they will be serving for that membership year.
Training Records: Volunteers will see this completion under the “Achievements” section of their gsLearn account.
Training records of completion will also be available in Looker for Service Unit Managers and Registrars to review and manage the training compliance for their unit volunteers.
What if I have questions on the responsibilities and expectations listed on the position descriptions, who do I contact?
Contact our Customer Care department at 800-345-6858 or customercare@gsofsi.org and we will be happy to help answer your questions!
What if I choose to not accept the responsibilities and expectations of the position of a role(s)?
Volunteers are provided an option to decline the position appointment in the gsLearn course. Volunteers are instructed to use this form to report their declination to the council for further support or action towards the role/course assignment. The course will not show 100% complete during this step. Ultimately, if the volunteer decides to not accept the position appointment, the course assignment will be removed.
Service Unit Managers may also fill out this form on behalf of the volunteer declining the position appointment as the receipt of this form’s submission will prompt council staff to remove the individual from the training assignment.
It’s renewal season - why have I been assigned two courses?
Volunteers who haven’t completed the training for the current year, but who have renewed for the next membership year will see two training assignments to correspond with each membership year. Both need to be completed.
What do I do if I accept an additional role throughout the membership year? The simplicity of the Understanding Your Role course will allow the volunteer to return to the course to ‘retake’ the it and review the newly added position description(s) and accept the position appointment(s). This ‘retake’ will be captured in gsLearn as part of their “Achievements”.
Where can I find copies of the position descriptions to download a copy?
Copies (PDF’s) are available to download from the gsLearn course or by searching our Forms and Documents page by position title.
Effective October 2021, this course can be found in your gsLearn course library. It is the prerequisite for Camping Out and will provide you with general camping information such as: how to reserve Camp Torqua, learn camp courtesies, how to identify poison ivy, and much more! This is a one-time certification course that does not expire. After you complete it, it will remain in your course library as a resource for you to reference at any time. Camping In does not certify you to build a fire of any kind. If you wish to have a fire during your campout you must complete both parts of the Camping Out program. You can download the manual here.
This blended training program will break down the importance of preparing for a campout with your girls and understanding the fundamental skills while on the campout: fire building, outdoor cooking, using outdoor equipment and maintaining safety measures. This new training format offers a blended learning opportunity through a four course gsLearn learning path and in-person training. The online portion of the training, completion of which is required before taking the in-person portion, will guide learners through the key information in the Camping Out manual and familiarize participants with the different skills and safety protocols that are necessary for a fun and safe camping experience. You can download the manual here.
The in-person portion of the training will give participants an opportunity to learn and practice the essential outdoor skills in a hands-on environment under the guidance of a Girl Scout Adult Learning Facilitator. This is required for camping with girls in any setting and at least one volunteer attending the campout must complete this course. Verification of completion of both parts is necessary prior to your camp date. This is a 3-year certification that can be renewed via a recertification test on gsLearn.
Recertification Test: This gsLearn course is replacing the paper Camping Out Recertification Test. When re-certifying in gsLearn for the first time, volunteers should contact Customer Care at customercare@gsofsi.org or (800) 345-6858 to request this training release/assignment. The course will be assigned to the volunteer in gsLearn and will be available in the “Not Started” tab on the gslearn dashboard. After the 3-year compliance/certification expires, volunteers can return to the course to re-take the test to renew the certification once again.
Want to see your training progress in gsLearn? Visit the “Achievements” section in your gsLearn account to see your training completion history, download certificates of completion or to review your course compliance status on those courses with certificate expirations.
This gsLearn course is designed to increase a volunteer’s waterfront safety knowledge and competencies before engaging girls and/or troops in water-based activities. This training offers a 3-year certification and can be renewed by taking the course again on gsLearn. This course is also a prerequisite for Small Craft Safety. Remember to always check the Safety Activity Checkpoints to ensure you have the correct amount of adult supervision to support your specific water-based activity. Each adult acting as a water watcher needs to complete this course. To find this training in gsLearn, go to your “Content Library” and use the keyword “waterfront” in the search bar. To view the manual click here.
Our blended learning canoeing certification courses are offered throughout the year at various locations. Participants must first complete the Small Craft Safety learning path prior to their in-person skill training. A flat-water canoe certification is required when taking girls out in canoes on still water. This training offers a 2-year certification and must be renewed by repeating the gsLearn and in-person training. Prerequisite: Waterfront Safety: Water Watcher Training course in gsLearn.
This blended course teaches skills to prevent, recognize and respond to small craft emergencies in moving water as well as building skills to perform rescues of self and others. All online learning details for the training will be released and shared with registrants through their confirmation letters. This training is valid for 2 years and can be renewed by retaking the blended program.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Small Craft Safety Training: Canoe (Flat-Water) with a current/active trained status.
A GSofSI Archery certification is required to reserve and use the council archery equipment with girls and is now a blended learning training that includes an in-person and gsLearn component. During this training, you will learn the parts of a bow and arrow, how to string and de-string a bow, how to set-up an archery range, how to properly stand/shoot, and how to work with the girls. The certification is valid for 3 years. Cost is $5.
A “First-Aider” is a registered adult volunteer who has taken Girl Scout approved First-aid and CPR training that includes specific instructions for pediatric/child CPR as well as AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training. Many activities in Girl Scouts, including overnights and activities outside your regular troop, require at least one adult volunteer present to hold an approved and current Adult and Pediatric/Child CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois highly recommends a troop have more than one person trained. Visit our GSofSI’s Event Calendar for scheduled training programs.
We may ask that you submit a copy of your First-Aider’s current certification card when your troop is participating in an activity that requires a First-Aider be present. GSofSI will require you to submit a copy of your First Aider’s current certification anytime your troop is planning to use one of our camps or when the troop plans to travel. Additional training in Wilderness Remote First Aid may be required if your troop will be in a remote area where EMS is more than 30 minutes away.
There are many organizations that provide First Aid/CPR/AED certifications, but not all are approved providers by Girl Scouts of the USA. Below you will find a list of approved providers. Starting on October 1, 2019, GSofSI will no longer accept certification cards from any organization that is not on the GSUSA approved provider list.
Approved Providers:
If you currently have a First Aid/CPR/AED from organization that is not on the list above and took the training prior to October 1, 2019, we will honor it until it becomes expired at which time you must renew from one of the approved providers. If you are taking a certification class for the first time, you must use one of the approved providers.
Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois will not accept any First Aid/CPR/AED certification courses that are done entirely online, with the exception of the American Red Cross First Aid Only course. We will accept a blended learning course if it has been completed using one of the approved providers listed above. A blended learning course is made up of an online learning piece that is followed up with a person demonstration.
Please note that the following healthcare providers can serve as Advanced First Aiders as long as they submit a copy of their current license as well as a current CPR/AED certification card: Physician, Physician’s Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Paramedic, Military Medic, and EMT.
Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois partners with the American Red Cross and we offer classes throughout the year for our volunteers. The classes we offer are Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid Blended classes and First Aid Only Blended classes. As the blended learning classes are scheduled, they will be listed on the Events tab on the GSofSI website. The First Aid Only class is for those volunteers that already have a current certification in CPR and AED from a preferred provider but are missing the first aid portion as required to be the troop's "First Aider."
We now have two options available for volunteers to complete their First Aid certifications! As of March 2023, the American Red Cross First Aid Only Online course is an approved choice to complete your requirements. Click here to directly register through the American Red Cross. Once you have completed the course and received your certification, please email that certification to customercare@gsofsi.org. For any additional questions, please refer to Volunteer Essentials, Safety Activity Checkpoints or contact Customer Care.
There are many training opportunities and locations who host CPR/AED and First Aid training around our council. Remember to be the troop’s First Aider, the certification must include Adult and Pediatric/Child CPR/AED and First Aid. If you obtain a certification that only has CPR/AED, the certification for First Aid can be completed with this online course. As of March 2023, this is the only approved online-only American Red Cross training available for volunteers.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders. YMHFA offers a 3-year certification which can be renewed online or in-person.
When caring for yourself or someone else with a mental health need, it is important to have access to resources. Here are some viable options to help you. If you are someone you know is in a crisis, contact Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.
As you begin making travel plans, whether it be a single overnight or a Girl Scout Destinations trip, complete the Traveling with Troops course in gsLearn. This course is required for volunteers to understand the responsibilities of coordinating and supervising troops on outings: day, overnight and extended travel. Training verification of at least one volunteer attending the outing is required prior to your travel date. This is a one-time certification course. Log into MY GS, navigate to gsLearn and look in your “Content Library” for this course.
There are several resources available to you to help you with your travel plans or are part of our required process to approve and a support any trip requests. Be sure to review the Travel Progression Chart to determine the activity level most appropriate for your troop. Want to get girls and parents involved in the travel planning? The VTK can help facilitate Girl-Led Planning!
Utilize the pre-written plans as a guide for involving the girls in the planning process. For example: The “Junior Badge” year plan includes two meetings to work on the Savvy Shopper badge.
If you know that your girls have other interests, you can let them lead the way to find alternate activities for those two meetings by researching options, and making agenda changes together--all within the VTK! More information about Girl-Led planning is available in your grade level training resources.
To help you, your leader team, and parents remember important dates throughout the Girl Scout year, your Year Plan will show “Year Milestones.” These orange banners appear in chronological order with your troop’s meeting and activities.
Create and Edit Meeting Agendas
The VTK serves as the go-to place for everyone within your troop to see important information about meetings and activities, including locations, times and materials needed.
Your whole team of leaders can edit meeting agendas and meeting aide resources within the VTK. When additional meetings or activities are created, you can add resources from the VTK library onto your blank agenda.
Your girl's parents have read-only access to meeting agendas in the VTK. This allows them to stay up-to-date on everything their daughter is enjoying in Girl Scouts!

What is Looker?
Looker is business intelligence and data analytics platform utilized by the Girl Scout movement to explore, analyze, and share our business analytics. In short, it allows us to track a plethora of data from membership numbers, program registrations, courses completed for training, and more! Service Unit Managers and Service Unit Registrars are the only volunteers who have access to Looker.
What is the benefit of using Looker?
As part of the Service Unit team, you play an integral role in managing and understanding the data and metrics for your unit’s success. You can utilize Looker to help track membership numbers for recruitments, track courses your volunteers are required to complete, or track data that is uploaded to each troop’s listing in the online opportunity catalog, to name just a few things.
What training resources are available to me?
Check out our QRG’s! The acronym “QRG’s” refers to “quick reference guides,” or digitally printed tutorials that users can read and reference when completing a task. Our Adult Education team has compiled a small library of QRG’s to help you navigate Looker and utilize available reports to help you in your role and help your service unit team reach its goals. Check them out to begin learning more about the kinds of data and benchmarks your service unit is generating and achieving!
How do I access Looker?
The Community Engagement Manager (CEM) for your area will assist in getting the role assigned of Service Unit Manager or Service Unit Registrar in our volunteer management system. Prior to the role assignment, the Service Unit Manager or Service Unit Registrar will receive an email containing the Looker Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). This must be read and signed to gain access to Looker.
Once this role is fully active in our system, Looker access is available the next day. The volunteer should complete the assigned 416 (GSofSI Council) Looker Training course in gsLearn to receive first time logon access instructions as well as learning about the various reports and information one should be managing from this platform.
For returning Service Unit Managers or Service Unit Registrars, if an updated NDA is needed due to revised conditions or terms, another email request will be sent to you.
Are there any other steps for me as a Service Unit Manager or Service Unit Registrar?
Yes. Once you are set up in Looker, continue to reference the QRG’s at your convenience and be on the lookout for any additional training that might be available through gsLearn or in-person sessions throughout the membership year.
