Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois congratulates Aspen Rehkemper from Effingham, Illinois for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout—a designation she earned by building a sand volleyball court at Camp Wassatoga.
Aspen and her Girl Scout troop leader were discussing the need for more outdoor activities at Camp Wassatoga. Since Aspen has a love for volleyball, she felt creating a sand volleyball court would be a perfect Gold Award project.
Aspen gathered a team of donors and volunteers to assist her with her project. She spent many hours doing research and preparing for her project. During the summer of 2022, Aspen and her team got to work. As a result of her work, Camp Wassatoga now has a regulation size sand volleyball court. To cap off her project, Aspen held a volleyball camp where the participants could earn a badge.
Aspen gained skills that will last a lifetime as a result of her project. “I learned how to delegate, organize a team, and manage my time to complete my project on time,” said Aspen. “I also learned valuable leadership skills that I hope to carry into my career of choice.”
As they take action to transform their world, Gold Award Girl Scouts gain tangible skills and prove they are the leaders our community and world need. The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since the highest award was established in 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change. The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable.
Aspen is the daughter of Tom and Nessa Rehkemper. She is attending Lake Land College where she is studying nursing. Aspen is a Trifecta Girl Scout who has earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award, Girl Scout Silver Award, and Girl Scout Gold Award.
