Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois congratulates Cheyenne Brundies from Brussels, Illinois for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout—a designation she earned by addressing the importance of proper retirement of American flags.
Cheyenne’s project developed as a result of people in her community approaching her, knowing she was a Girl Scout and could help. Calhoun County was in need of easily accessible 24/7 flag drop-off locations in order for American flags to receive proper care. Being from a military family, Cheyenne knew the importance of proper flag care and wanted to educate others on the topic.
Cheyenne established weathered American flag drop-off boxes, along with educational display stands, at three different locations throughout Calhoun County. Once the drop-off boxes were in place, she held flag exchange drive-throughs at each location. People who retired an American flag at these events received a new flag in return. Cheyenne also used her project as an opportunity to educate the public on this topic at various events throughout the community.
Cheyenne had a great support system for her Gold Award project. Her project advisor (Chad), fellow Girl Scout (Olivia), and family members encouraged her along the way. “While completing my project, I learned how to be flexible with plans and deal with unexpected challenges while keeping my head up and not letting it get me down,” said Cheyenne.
As they take action to transform their world, Gold Award Girl Scouts gain tangible skills and prove they are the leaders our community and world need. The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since the highest award was established in 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change. The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable.
Cheyenne is the daughter of Craig Brundies, Denise Brundies-Scranton, and Travis Scranton. She is a junior at Brussels Community High School. Cheyenne is a Trifecta Girl Scout who has earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award, Girl Scout Silver Award, and Girl Scout Gold Award.
