Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois congratulates Olivia Brodbeck from Batchtown, Illinois for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout—a designation she earned by renovating her community’s basketball court.
For some time, people in Olivia’s town talked about the need for an improved basketball court for their community. Olivia – in true Girl Scout fashion – took action.
Olivia committed to renovating the Batchtown Town Park’s basketball court for her Girl Scout Gold Award project. She started by making the basketball court bigger and adding two new basketball systems. She then striped the correct lines on the court, added a bench, and even included basketballs and educational materials. To culminate her project, Olivia hosted a basketball camp on the newly renovated court.
Through her project, Olivia gained a wealth of skills. “During this project, I learned about research, budgeting, pouring concrete, and leading a team,” said Olivia. “I also learned a lot about myself; I can complete anything I put my mind to.”
As they take action to transform their world, Gold Award Girl Scouts gain tangible skills and prove they are the leaders our community and world need. The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since the highest award was established in 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change. The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable.
Olivia is the daughter of Amanda and Chad Brodbeck. She is currently a sophomore at Brussels Community High School. Olivia is a Trifecta Girl Scout who has earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award, Girl Scout Silver Award, and Girl Scout Gold Award.
