Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois congratulates Adelyn Schroeder from Bartelso, Illinois for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout—a designation she earned by creating a kickball court and other games for local schoolchildren to enjoy.
Adelyn wanted to do something to get kids moving and having fun together. Together with Principal Siegler at Bartelso Elementary, she decided to create more recreational activities for students to enjoy during recess. She believed that playing outdoor games would help children be more active, practice teamwork, and build their social skills.
Adelyn researched fun games, and decided to make playing areas for kickball, foursquare, Twister, and more. First, she worked with a professional drafter to create a digital blueprint. Then, she researched and collected asphalt paint, as well as volunteers to help. She led the team to stencil and paint several game fields. Adelyn also researched game rules, then collaborated with a local PE teacher to write instructions. Last, she facilitated the design and installation of a flat-panel wall sign with the games’ instructions and rules.
As they take action to transform their world, Gold Award Girl Scouts gain tangible skills and prove they are the leaders our community and world need. The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since the highest award was established in 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change. The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable.
Not only do Gold Award Girl Scouts better their communities through their projects, they often grow themselves through the process and learn skills they can take with them throughout their lives. “This project has taught me the importance of teamwork and collaboration,” Adelyn said. “It also allowed me to see people experience more joy in my community.”
Adelyn is the daughter of Pam Schroeder and Jake Schroeder. She is currently a junior at Breese Central High School. Adelyn is a Trifecta Girl Scout who has earned the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.
