Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois congratulates Kennedy Cason from East St. Louis, Illinois for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout—a designation she earned by improving the lives of seniors in her community.
For two years, Kennedy volunteered at East St. Louis Township. During that time, she engaged with many of the seniors who benefited from the services offered there. Kennedy regularly brought novels that she would read during her breaks. The seniors often expressed interest in what she was reading, so Kennedy became inspired to provide reading opportunities for them.
For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Kennedy created a literacy library for the seniors of East St. Louis Township. She worked with a variety of book vendors to provide the books for the library. Kennedy was sure to include a variety of genres so there would be something of interest for everyone. She also recognized the importance of keeping our minds engaged at every stage of life. “There is no age limit on learning new things,” said Kennedy, reflecting on her Gold Award project.
As they take action to transform their world, Gold Award Girl Scouts gain tangible skills and prove they are the leaders our community and world need. The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since the highest award was established in 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change. The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable.
Kennedy is the daughter of Missy Cason. She is currently attending Tennessee State University.
