Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois congratulates Mackenzie Davis from Highland, Illinois for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout—a designation she earned by spearheading an initiative that encouraged kids to spend more time outdoors.
In her younger years, Mackenzie often spent hours outdoors at a time – a habit that was very dear to her. She noticed that children have been spending less and less time outside, so she wanted to reverse that trend by reminding them of how much fun can be had in the great outdoors.
Mackenzie started by hosting a field day event that incorporated traditional outdoor activities – such as hiking and playing tag – as well as activities that are often enjoyed indoors. By introducing board games and crafts to the field day, it showcased how the outdoors can serve as the backdrop for a lot of the activities we all enjoy.
Mackenzie also created a virtual bingo event. By participating in things like swimming, painting rocks, and trying something new, kids crossed items off their bingo card and were able to have fun outside all summer long. Finally, Mackenzie organized an annual donation drive for supplies to help ensure summer camps would continue for years to come.
As they take action to transform their world, Gold Award Girl Scouts gain tangible skills and prove they are the leaders our community and world need. The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since the highest award was established in 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change. The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable.
Not only do Gold Award Girl Scouts better their communities through their projects, they often grow themselves through the process and learn skills they can take with them throughout their lives. “I learned to always try new experiences even if they seem hard,” said Mackenzie. “If you put your mind to something you will be able to accomplish it no matter how challenging it may be.”
Mackenzie is the daughter of Dena Davis. She is currently attending Maryville University where she is studying early childhood and elementary education. Mackenzie is a Trifecta Girl Scout who has earned the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.
