Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSofSI) Robotics Teams showed their STEM skill during FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge regional tournaments on Dec. 2. In FLL Challenge, students in grades 4-8 plan and build an autonomous robot that they program to navigate missions that score points on a gameboard. They also conduct an extensive research project. After several weeks of preparation, teams meet at regional tournaments where they compete using their robots and deliver a research presentation.
Six Girl Scout teams competed in regionals at SWIC in Belleville: Campfire Girls from Edwardsville, Master Builders from O’Fallon, Minecraft Bees from Highland, The Puzzlers from Waterloo, R.O.B.O.T.I.C.S 4 Life from Waterloo, and Neon Frogs from Troy. Axolegos from Effingham competed at University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. During these tournaments, four GSofSI Robotics Teams were recognized for their outstanding performance:
Axolegos: advanced to sectional competition; won the Breakthrough Award, which celebrates significant progress.
Campfire Girls: advanced to sectional competition; won Robot Performance 2nd Place for achieving the second highest score during the robot table game. They also won the Innovation Project Award for their creative, well-researched, and well-communicated project.
Neon Frogs: advanced to sectional competition; won Rising All-Star Award, which recognizes a team from which judges expect great things.
Minecraft Bees: won the Motivate Award for embracing the culture of FIRST LEGO League through team building, team spirit, and enthusiasm.
Congratulations to all of our GSofSI Robotics Teams for their commitment and dedication during this FIRST LEGO League season! Good luck to Axolegos, Campfire Girls, and Neon Frogs as they compete in Sectionals on January 20. Thank you to Bayer Fund for helping make our Girl Scout Robotics program possible!
