On Feb. 20, Campfire Girls from Edwardsville won the Champions Award during FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge sectionals.. Their coach, Ellen Helmers, also won the Mentor Award. They will compete next at the Illinois State Championship on Feb. 17 in Elgin.
GSofSI Robotics Teams Axolegos from Effingham and Neon Frogs from Troy also competed at FLL sectionals but did not advance, wrapping up excellent seasons.
In FLL Challenge, students in grades 4-8 plan and build an autonomous robot that they program to navigate missions that score points on a gameboard. They also conduct an extensive research project. After several weeks of preparation, teams meet at regional tournaments where they compete using their robots and deliver a research presentation.
